tomoki tamuras holic trax label has long been renowned as a canny exporter of clued in house and techno. their latest continues in this regard, as tamura again calls on a series of renowned label friends to bring the heat. with names such as mr.g, satoshi tommie and tuccillo all appearing it here alongside tamura himself, it s no surprise that this 3 x vinyl record, celebrating 5 years of the label, is filled with drama and high points throughout. this is immediately obvious from mr.gs soba shioyaki. titled in homage to the label s japanese heritage, it s a dark and dexterous workout that marks another high point in a career filled with big records. deep but tough, it s a perfect of why the tech house master is so revered in underground circles. gs komorebi- puts a tough emphasis on the drums, as well as a weaving, subtle baseline that adds a further dynamic to his work here. ht24 comes from satoshi tommiie & tuccillo, two producers whose sounds are perfectly suited to holic s output. their four-track contribution starts with do it, a spiky catchy number that s exciting from the off. -what row- sees the boys inject some added funk into the equation, before to ray ups the intensity with a raw, pulverising aesthetic that takes no prisoners. wrapping up their side of the bargain is the digital only you know, a real bumper of a track with chicago-inspired synth stabs that help bring it to higher planes. it s the left to tamura himself to close the offering via ht25. a1, the appropriately named -5ive years is a techno workout of the type that s notable for its off-kilter motifs and a stubborn, industrial feel. unforgiving and full of atmosphere, it s the sign of a producer who clearly knows his way around he mixing deck. polyphonic six displays the producer s more introspective sound thanks to a melancholic perspective that s hard not to embrace. all things told, this is a wonderfully diverse package from tamura & co. here s to the next 5!

limited edition remastered reissue of an obsure italian balearic disco song produced and arranged by victorio pezzolla the same man behind the project -asso - don t stop- that was a big hit during early 80s in the n.y.c. underground clubs, regularly played by larry levan at paradise garage and by david mancuso at loft. the plus on this limited edition reissue is that the production is directly handled by the former producer to obtain a more accurate sound compared from the first release.

“eagles & butterflies has taken storm in electronic wonderland - boiler room arpeggiator was originally titled 14 minutes of arps and its exactly that. its one of the simplest tracks iv ever made with probably only 8 layers that your weaves in and out the whole way through, really love the subtleness of this track where at the same time it is also a beast! oyeme is maybe the e&b sound people are familiar with, big marimba melodies, fat sub and rolling hats with a big break, love this one prophet was originally just an experiment when i purchased a prophet 6, its a little crazy and pretty full on, love the funky bass in the one from the sh 101. all the parts for this where recorded in a few takes live and two whole track was made in 2 hours!

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established, when rooted records was king, the cosy, liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years, naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city, from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world, in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years, idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes, shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately, the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side, the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album, originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands, lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass, with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation, but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side, atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us, it was apparently huge at disc shop zero, so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart, these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch, but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks, naoki.

drumcode continues its commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge techno. with releases this year already from adam beyer, pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika and julian jeweil, this july sees the return of enrico sangiuliano with astral projection. after his remix of mobys of why does my heart feel so bad back in november last year, enrico sought creative inspiration from his travels, transcending that into his productions and long studio sessions during the winter months. the result brings a mind and body melting release from the italian producer. the title track astral projection is a captivating, big room techno masterpiece. deep reverberations punch alongside a sinisterly crisp percussive drive. launching into a groove laden synth modulation of low end textures, it breaks down into an ethereal amalgamation of pads and synths before the vocal launches, taking this track to another level. ‘blooming era has destructive dancefloor intent. there is no holding back with the low end synth modulation which enrico has mastered to perfection. a tightly woven percussive flare moulds flawlessly with the rolling oscillations of the beast of this track. if you have seen label head honcho adam beyer playing anywhere on the globe in the last 5 months, this has been a peak time favourite. road-tested to the max, and with much success.

since his last appearance on hemlock (2015 s double ep hek025) hodge has produced a seemingly effortless sequence of celebrated eps and collaborations for livity sound, berceuse heroique and no corner. equally comfortable squaring up with heavyweights such as randomer and peder mannerfelt as he is maintaining a prolific solo production output, hodge has cemented himself as a leading voice in uk dance music and a champion of the elusive sweet spot where functional techno resonates with soundsystem culture. a quick listen through his recent ra mix is a great way to keep up to speed with his recent output. one for the hemlock fans who have been patiently tolerating this year s more experimental cuts. swing for the fences is straight down to business getting the kicks in below one of those ear-wormer percussive atonal toplines hodge does so well… the drop is one of the heaviest we ve heard this year and tipped to raise some fingers, open mouths and spill drinks across dancefloors and tv studios worldwide. less pool cue more pool party aomame is a breezy melodic (patio) heater powered by tough drums and intricate percussive work. arranged for both the dancers and the heads it freely refreshes and translates the main theme with a precision and playfulness that few producers can match. medway will warm up or cool out the dance with big room sirens and some rude detuned drum work. still no messing about on the b2: it s a hodge thing all the way.

by the time mobb deep hit with their third album – hell on earth – they were solidified street legends. coming off the critically acclaimed the infamous, havoc and prodigy hit the lab and came back with a soundtrack that is fitting to its title. havoc’s production is atmospheric, laced with his trademark drums loops and sharp pianos stabs. add prodigy’s trademark flow and it’s evident that the pairing is such an amazing match. while hell on earth is essentially a continuation of the infamous you can still hear the growth in both performers and hell on earth stands as some of their best work. the album features guest appearances by nas, raekwon, method man, and frequent collaborator big noyd.

on the prowl appears to be on a roll with its new found artists. following up robotalcos success on the previous otp, giorgio lands himself in anthem territory. the a1 track >more heart< is big, catchy, and totally feel good house vibes with disco styled horn flourishes. the a side inside cut >basement 6d22< takes us near kerri chandler with delayed brassy chord stabbing and long organ pads. flipping the record over reveals a stunning slo mo disco house workout, filled with jam style organ riffs and amazing synth horn parts. for b2 we get a perscription style deep house track with all the right dark drifting chords. excellent release.

it has been eleven long years since urbs dropped his last album which was called “toujours le meme film”. back then, the musician, dj and producer created the soundtrack to a fictitious film noir, which was released on kruder & dorfmeister‘s g-stone label, but after touring europe he almost completely retreated from public life. he does not consider his creativity as being his career, but rather as a part of his life which rarely is subject to concrete planning, and that is why urbs quite consciously took his time to create his latest –untitledalbum.

tomoki tamura s holic trax label has long been renowned as a canny exporter of clued in house and techno. their latest continues in this regard, as tamura again calls on a series of renowned label friends to bring the heat. with names such as mr.g, satoshi tommie and tuccillo all appearing it here alongside tamura himself, it s no surprise that this 3 x vinyl record, celebrating 5 years of the label, is filled with drama and high points throughout. this is immediately obvious from mr.gs soba shioyaki. titled in homage to the label s japanese heritage, it s a dark and dexterous workout that marks another high point in a career filled with big records. deep but tough, it s a perfect of why the tech house master is so revered in underground circles. gs komorebi puts a tough emphasis on the drums, as well as a weaving, subtle baseline that adds a further dynamic to his work here.
